English, Languages, Indigenous Studies

Department Overview

We emphasize the development of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Starting in grade 9, students refine their literacy skills by analyzing a variety of challenging literary texts from various periods, countries, and cultures, as well as a range of informational and graphic texts to polish up their media literacy skills. Students are also tasked with creating oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms, making meaningful connections between texts, the world, and themselves. As students get to Grade 12, there is an enhanced focus on using language with precision and clarity and incorporating stylistic devices appropriately and effectively to communicate their ideas.
