Each year, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board Student Recognition Awards celebrate excellence in student leadership. Students are chosen by their principals and vice-principals for their demonstration of initiative, supported by the will to succeed, the dedication to finish what they started, and the commitment to achieve their personal best.
Congratulations to this year’s winner from Hillcrest High School,
Shom P.!
Shom P. is a self-motivated and compassionate leader at Hillcrest High School, both in and out of the classroom. His impact on the school community at Hillcrest has been monumental; not only has he set an incredible example as a dedicated volunteer, high-achieving student, and talented athlete, but he has also inspired others as a benevolent and respectful human being. Shom navigated the role of Council Co-President as a Grade 11 student with confidence and poise, fulfilling all of the promises made during his campaign, an especially difficult feat during a year heavily impacted by the pandemic. He inspired school spirit and fostered a sense of community, collaborating with others to make sure his peers got the high school experience they deserved. He has continued this commitment to the well-being of students this year as well, mentoring and supporting his peers however he can. Whether he is helping another student study for a test, coaching a teammate to improve their footwork before a big game, or mentoring members of the Student Council, Shom’s impact is broad and varied! He practices what he preaches, always holding himself accountable and never lowering his expectations of himself, which has in turn empowered others to follow suit. Above all, Shom is a young man of integrity who personifies goodwill and shows up for staff and students alike. His reliability and positive attitude will be greatly missed!
